We were out yesterday in the front yard working in the flower bed. Caleb stepped in an ant pile and we quickly brushed the ants off his feet. We went together to get the "scary ant killer" as he calls it. We watched as the ants carried the poison into their mound and Caleb asked why the ants are taking it into their house. I explained that they think it is food so they are taking it for their friends to eat. Then Caleb said, "They don't know that we are being mean?"
Something about that struck a cord with me. The little ants just think they are in luck and food is falling from the sky. Little do they know they are participating in their own demise.
I am not giving up on using ant killer, because I have witnessed the pain they cause the boys, but there is something there. Maybe my little boy is feeling compassion for these little bugs he hates. I don't know yet. It was just an interesting conversation.
